In 1850, legislation authorized the Alabama Secretary of State to file and certify articles of incorporation for road construction companies and the Corporations Division was born. In the years that followed, steamship, railroad, banks, and insurance companies were required to file articles or charters of incorporation with the Secretary of State. In time, the Office of the Secretary of State became the depository for various entity records and the need for a Business Entity section was evident. Today, the Business Entity Division, staffed by 12 employees, receives some 500 requests each day for information regarding its 250,000 filings.

The Business Entity Division operates as a depository for records of domestic entities and foreign entities that have qualified to transact business in Alabama. The types of entities we serve include For-Profit Corporations, Non-Profit Corporations, Limited Liability Companies, Limited Partnerships, Registered Limited Liability Partnerships, and Limited Liability Limited Partnerships.
